Terms of Use

Last updated: June 10, 2026

Welcome to Know a Local. These Terms of Use ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and Know a Local LLC ("Know a Local," "we," "us," or "our") covering your use of our website and services (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. What Know a Local is (and isn't)

Know a Local is a local services directory. Otto, our matching assistant, reads what you're looking for and points you to local providers who may be able to help, and tells you why they might fit.

We are an intermediary, not a service provider. We do not perform the services listed, we do not employ the providers, and we are not a party to any agreement, transaction, or interaction between you and a provider. We do not vet, verify, endorse, guarantee, or supervise any provider or their work.

2. Listings and provider information are self-reported

Information shown on listings, including descriptions, capabilities, contact details, and any badges such as "insured," "licensed," "bonded," or "background-checked," is provided by the providers themselves and is not independently verified by Know a Local. We don't confirm licenses, insurance, qualifications, or background checks. You are responsible for doing your own due diligence before hiring anyone, including confirming licensing and insurance directly with the provider.

3. Your interactions are your own risk

Any contact, communication, agreement, payment, or work between you and a provider is solely between the two of you. We are not responsible for the quality, safety, legality, timeliness, or outcome of any service, and we make no guarantees about any provider. Use common sense and ordinary caution, just as you would with any referral from a neighbor.

4. Using the Service

5. Providers

If you create a listing, you confirm that you are an independent provider, not an employee, agent, or partner of Know a Local. You are solely responsible for your own licensing, insurance, taxes, legal compliance, and the accuracy of your listing. You grant us a non-exclusive license to display and promote the information you submit. We may edit, decline, pause, or remove any listing at our discretion, for example if it's inaccurate, misleading, or violates these Terms.

6. Messages, reviews, and content

The Service lets people contact providers and leave reviews. Don't send spam, harassment, or unlawful content, and don't post fake or misleading reviews. We may monitor, moderate, remove, or decline content, and we may limit or suspend accounts that abuse the Service. You're responsible for content you submit, and you grant us a license to display it as part of the Service.

7. Intellectual property

The Service, including its design, text, and Otto, is owned by Know a Local. Content you submit remains yours, but you grant us the license described above to operate the Service.

8. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any provider or match will meet your needs.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Know a Local and its owners will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising out of your use of the Service or your dealings with any provider. To the extent we are found liable for anything, our total liability will not exceed one hundred U.S. dollars ($100) or the amount you paid us in the past twelve months, whichever is greater.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Know a Local and its owners from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the Service, your content, your listing, or your interactions and transactions with others.

11. Changes to the Service and these Terms

Know a Local is currently free to list during our pilot. We may change the Service, including introducing paid plans in the future. If we make material changes, such as starting to charge, we'll give listed providers advance notice (for example, by email and an in-app notice) before the change takes effect. We may also update these Terms; continued use after an update means you accept the revised Terms.

12. Termination

You can delete your listing at any time from your account page. We may suspend or end your access if you violate these Terms or misuse the Service.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Washington, and you consent to that venue. We encourage you to contact us first so we can try to resolve things informally.

14. Contact
