Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 10, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what Know a Local LLC ("Know a Local," "we," "us," or "our") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Know a Local, you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us:
- When you create a listing: your name or business name, email, phone, the area you serve, and the details and skills you choose to add.
- Your contact-visibility choices (whether to show your phone or an email publicly), and any separate public contact email you provide.
- Messages you send to providers, reviews you write, and support or feedback requests.
Information collected automatically:
- Search queries you type (so Otto can match you and so we can see what locals need).
- Basic engagement events, such as when contact info is revealed or a message is sent, used for site analytics.
- Standard technical/log data and cookies (see Cookies below).
2. How we use your information
- To operate the Service: match searches to providers, show listings, and pass along messages.
- To draft optional bios and improve matching using AI (see below).
- To send service notices (for example, listing approval, messages relayed to you, or changes such as future pricing), and, if you opt in, occasional update emails. You can unsubscribe from optional emails at any time.
- To understand usage, prevent abuse and spam, and keep the Service safe.
3. AI processing
To match your request and to draft optional bios, your search text and listing text are processed by a third-party AI provider (Anthropic's Claude). This is used to generate matches and draft text, not to build advertising profiles.
4. How information is shared
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers that help us run Know a Local:
- Supabase: database, authentication, and file/image hosting.
- Anthropic: AI matching and bio drafting.
- Resend: sending email (sign-in links, notifications, relayed messages).
- Google: optional "Continue with Google" sign-in (we receive your name and email from Google when you choose it).
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety, rights, or property of users or the public.
5. What's public
Your listing is public by design, but your contact info is private by default: your phone and email are hidden unless you choose to show them, and your sign-in email is never published. People can reach you through the on-site message button, which forwards their note to your email without revealing your address to them. Reviews appear publicly with the name (or "A neighbor") chosen by the reviewer.
6. Cookies
We use a small number of cookies for essential functions only: keeping you signed in, and (during our private testing phase) the shared-access password gate. We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
7. Data retention
We keep your account and listing data while your listing is active. Search logs are retained for a limited window (about 90 days) for gap analysis and then pruned. If you delete your listing, we remove it and its associated images and reviews.
8. Your choices and rights
- Edit or delete your listing any time from your account page.
- Adjust what contact info is shown publicly.
- Unsubscribe from optional update emails via the link in any such email.
- Request access to or deletion of your information by contacting us.
9. Children
Know a Local is not directed to children and is intended for adults (18+). We don't knowingly collect information from children.
10. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, but no online service can be guaranteed perfectly secure. Please use a unique email and keep your account access to yourself.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the Service grows. If we make material changes, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, give notice within the Service.
